In this post I’ll talk to you about what a Montessori space for your kid may look like, inclusive of a Montessori bed and other items to make the space like home for your child as he or she grows. What is Montessori?

Montessori is named for an Italian doctor, Maria Montessori, who developed the method of education for children to encourage independence. Her premise was that children are eager to learn and thrive in environments the support their needs. In a nutshell, the Montessori way is designed to encourage children to learn by driving their own experiences in environments that are conducive to their cognitive, physical, and emotional skills.

How Can I Encourage Montessori at Home?

Choosing to incorporate Montessori at home can create valuable learning experiences for infants, toddlers, and school-aged children. There are simple changes you can make to create montessori at home for any space.

Organize. Creating any space for Montessori at home will require organization. Make sure everything has its designated place. This encourages accountability.

Storage. Place things within reach for your child. Store clothes and shoes at an acceptable height in baskets or bins they can reach.

Baby proof. Ensure the environment is safe with necessary gates, outlet covers, and cabinet restraints where necessary. Remove any furniture that can topple over onto your kid, or if you have to purchase items that can be bolted to walls. There are all kinds of kits made to do this.

Encourage independence. As soon as they are able, encourage children to clean up after themselves. I began having Little David “clean” his food messes, put away his bath toys, and even place his dirty clothes in his laundry basket.

Create a space for a select number of toys. Though Little David has more toys than he needs, we’ve tried to create Montessori at home for him by setting a space where his toys are stored in the family room. There are a few toys for him to choose from to make sure he has focus and not too many items to choose from.

Make playrooms and bedrooms easily child accessible. Everything should be within reach for your infant, toddler, or school-aged child. This, too, encourages Montessori at home.

Use Child Sized Furniture. This helps to encourage independence as well. Including things like a small tables and chairs, as well as a Montessori bed in your child’s bedroom fosters Montessori at home.

A Montessori Bed in Your Kid’s Room Encourages Safety and Independence

I remember when Little David began waking up in the middle of the night. Sometimes he would cry for me or my husband to come get him, but most times he would rock himself back to sleep. When he turned 2, we decided it was time to take the crib apart and add the toddler rails to foster more independence for him when waking up in the morning. The great thing about convertible cribs is if you get the conversion kits, you usually have a Montessori bed of sorts for your kid ready to go!

About Montessori floor beds. Proper Montessori floor beds are beds that are positioned on the floor. That way, it’s the easiest for your kid to slip into or out of at his or her own will. You can create your own Montessori floor bed by placing a small mattress adorned with many pillows and blankets for comfort, or you can opt to purchase a specifically designed toddler bed that was created to encourage Montessori at home.

Montessori floor beds are safe. One of the things my husband worried about was Little David falling out of bed. Luckily, his toddler bed that was converted from his crib had rails, and the bed was low. Montessori floor beds can also come with rails. However, in either case if your kid were to roll off they won’t roll to far and be injured.

Montessori beds are affordable! Montessori floor beds, and Montessori inspired beds that are easily accessible to your young child come in a variety of styles and price points. There are several selections suitable to meet your tastes and needs. Take a look at the choices and price points below to purchase your bed today!

If you saw Little David’s nursery tour, you know that we opted for a convertible crib that turned to a toddler bed, as I mentioned earlier. He’s actually taller than a lot of kids his age, so we had to quickly move to a twin size bed to make sure he’d be comfortable. Also, his room is a small size 10X10 and we really wanted to keep the glider in there because he loves it just as much as we do. Therefore, we didn’t choose to go with a Montessori floor bed, but instead chose a twin day bed with a trundle. The trundle is the part that opens for a dual bed (with an additional 6” mattress) and it also allows us to use it as storage if needed. He prefers to sleep on the top portion of the bed and we provide help with either a stool or ottoman for him.

To increase independence, we also made additional Montessori at home modifications by leveraging 2 of these bookcases that flank each side of his daybed. They are tall, but we were inspired by Nicole of Polished Playhouse and leveraged the first two shelves on each bookcase to create a wardrobe so that Little David could access his clothes and shoes. We purchased 2 of these tension rods , size 16”-28” from and they were adjustable to fit perfectly. We placed all of his favorite books on the second shelf so he can pick out books when he’s ready to read.

We also have a hamper for him to place his dirty clothes when it’s bath time, and extra storage for his favorite blankets and toys. We also keep an air purifier and sound machine in his room so placed those within reach for him to turn them on and off at his preference. He’s also able to reach the light switch in his room.

Toys for Montessori at Home

Again, we’re not strictly Montessori, but we do apply the principles in areas where we can because we love how it facilitates independence and encourages self-learning. Little David has toys that are Montessori, consisting of wooden puzzles, blocks, a cleaning set, and even a name puzzle to practice learning his colors as well as the spelling of his name. We also encourage him to play with STEM toys.

Most of his toys are stored in our family area since that’s where we spend most of our time. Storage bins and shelves that are easily accessible to your child are the way to go when it comes to toys. Also, keeping choices limited keeps them focused and less distracted, so only a few toys is just enough.

I really enjoyed planning the design for Little David’s room. Since he’s older now and able to really let us know how he feels, I could tell he really like rockets and space - hence the space theme. Making it toddler-friendly and making sure it met all of his needs was extra special.
